In the beginning, when Messenger was just Facebook chat, text chat was the only available way of chatting, and you could send pictures as well. You can chat with other Facebook users that aren't on your friends list as well after accepting access to the message. Hitting the gear icon from the notifications panel only affects the settings of FreeTime. Think of FreeTime as a kid-friendly shell over the typical profile interface. There’s probably an easier way, but this was what I (an tech unsavvy user) got to work after 2+ hours of trying. I then went back to the new child profile I created, opened messenger kids, put in my account info and logged him in and it worked. I did not open it yet! I switched back to the adult profile and went to the settings via the gear again and clicked “ storage” -> clicked on his profile name under household profiles (manage storage used by his profile) -> clicked “apps & games” -> clicked messenger kids and then clicked permissions and toggled it to yes for camera, mic, phone, and storage. I then switched to his new profile and downloaded kids messenger. Then I added messenger kids to his new profile from the adult profile by clicking on his account name clicking “add content” then “share content” then clicking on the games and apps tab and selecting messenger kids. What I did was on the adult profile on the fire, I selected the gear to get to settings clicked “profiles and family library” and then “add a child profile.” I made a new profile for my child and changed his birthday to make him 8 and also went and changed his birthday on his kids messenger profile on Facebook to make him 8 there as well. I noticed that my 8 year old was able to access the camera on messenger kids on his freetime profile, but not my 6 year old. I had this problem but was able to fix it. I know this is old but I’m posting this here in case it helps anyone.
